Welcome to Laboratory Exercises in Invertebrate Zoology, Third Edition. This laboratory manual is designed to support a one-semester course in invertebrate zoology or the invertebrate portion of a course in animal diversity, and to provide an affordable alternative to expensive, and often sadly out-of-date, lab manuals available from commercial publishers of academic materials. This lab manual grew out of a core set of materials I produced many years ago to support my invertebrate zoology course after I watched the price of commercially available lab manuals spiral out of control. The first edition was published in 2013, and in 2016 I refined and greatly expanded the original set of materials. Now, in 2023, because of significant advances in animal phylogenetics, I have updated and reorganized these exercises to reflect and include those changes. There are several changes to the third edition. These include the following. The third edition features updated taxonomies based on those outlined in Invertebrates 4e, by Brusca, et al. (2023). Some of the larger chapters have also been broken into multiple smaller ones to provide increased flexibility and options for covering taxa during lab meetings. There are 59 new figures, many of which are phylogenetic trees that are included to provide increased evolutionary context for many groups of animals, and 21 new links to virtual material, including virtual dissections that can be used for orientation, study, and review.
