Even now, sixteen years later, its aftershocks continue—not in the trembling of the earth, but in the trembling of memory, in the quiet tears of widows, in the unanswered questions of orphans, and in the persistent trauma carried by those who survived. In a country where structured mental health support systems remain limited, trauma often goes untreated. The concept of mental health care in Haiti continues to face stigma, cultural misunderstanding, and institutional scarcity. Psychological suffering is frequently interpreted through myth, spiritual taboo, or silence.Children who survive disaster without support frequently internalize their pain. Left unaddressed, trauma can impair cognitive functioning, academic achievement, and emotional development—affecting not only individuals but generations.
